Orangtua Claudia bertemu ketika ayahnya berada di Angkatan Udara, ditempatkan di Brindisi, Italia mana ia bertemu ibunya, seorang penduduk asli Italia. Dia lahir dan dibesarkan di Providence, Rhode Island dimana sebagai siswa SMA East Providence, ia terpilih untuk semua State Track dan Field team. Dia berpartisipasi dalam tiga Olimpiade Junior dan finish ketiga dalam lompatan panjang di Invitational Pantai Timur.
Setelah SMA, dia menghadiri sekolah Baldwin Wallace di Ohio dimana dia mengambil Jurusan Penyiaran dan jurnalisme. Dia memiliki program radio kampus sendiri, bekerja di Surat Kabar Amerika Providence dan di Boston television station WHDH-TV.
